A holistic & body-centered approach to mental health
WHAT IS 'SOMATIC' PSYCHOTHERAPY?
Somatics is a specialization within the psychotherapy field. "Somatic" means body. Simply put, this is a body-centered approach to mental health therapy.
To elaborate: everything we experience, whether it is the quality of our thoughts or our emotional states, has a bodily component to it. For example, we physically organize differently when we are excited verses when we are disappointed. We can observe this in our posture, muscle tone, quality of movement, and breath patterns and gain a deeper understanding of any given issue. Insight into our body-process gives access to the the past and possibilities for the future. This approach emphasizes how our bodies are contextualized in relationships, community, and societal systems.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SESSION LOOK LIKE?
Sessions are collaborative in nature and the structure shifts depending on the present needs. Generally, sessions start with an intentional "arrival" period. Once settled, themes are explored using mindfulness, body-sensing, movement, and hands-on bodywork along with conventional talk therapy techniques. Clients are encouraged to slow down and track the present-moment, even while processing the past and anticipating the future. This provides opportunities to ‘respond’ rather than ‘react' opening up opportunities to transform engrained patterns and resolve trauma. The session ends with about 10 minutes to integrate the work and close up the session.
Clients who engage the material between sessions tend to have more successful outcomes. Journaling, creative outlets, and practicing skills are strongly encouraged.
